Hoop Dancing is a "new" dance form?
...guess she's never been to a pow-wow.

Really though. I didn't catch that comment. They said stuff about it being new to them and needing to be educated about it which I thought was great. When the dancer explained the shapes he made and movements told a story it so made me want to know more. Wish there had be time for him to explain further. If there's anyone on here familiar with hoop dancing who could share some more detail I'd love to hear it.

It was not the guy hoop dancer I was posting on. He was amazing, explained hoop dancing really well, and I think I saw him at a pow wow a few years ago in AB. It was the young lady in Montreal (she slept through half of Blake's boot camp) I was referring to. She commented on creating a new dance form.
Guess we are in different time zones and see the dancers at different times!

That explains it, I actually missed the first half of the show tonight so didn't see the girl. The guy had me really intrigued to know more about the symbolism involved. I'd love to know what the story was his dance told and how to read the symbols.

Head out to the pow wows! You'll see some of the most awesome dancing. And please...it's regalia, not a costume, and it's personal to each dancer. . If you ask permission, most dancers will allow you to photograph them in their regalia.
Girls dance Fancy, Shawl, Traditional and Jingle. I wanted to be a shawl dancer, but I wasn't fast enough (and I got dizzy). But I was gifted with a shawl, and my sister was gifted with Traditional regalia. She looks beautiful in it.
Women dance Traditional and Jingle. Jingle dresses can weigh a ton!
Men and boys dance Fancy, Grass, Traditional and Hoop. I did see one girl hoop dancer when I was a kid. Champion hoop dancers will have over a dozen hoops.
Because most pow-wows are outside on grass, being able to just stay upright is a real trick!

her hoop dancing wasn't anywhere near his hoop dancing if I had a hullahoop and didn't think I would get dizzy from all the spinning I could do what she did. I don't think she was refurring to the Native form of hoop dancing when she said it was a new thing

Citygirl, I just may take you up on that suggestion if I can locate a pow wow in my area. I'm in Nova Scotia though and if there are very many of them in my area they don't receive much press or advertising so it could be tricky.

The redman can get ahead man...
whoot! whoot! finally, the young man in vancouver said he thought the first nations people would be proud of him, when he was asked about how the first nations would take him "coming out".
well, i am a first nations grandmother and i tell u i am proud!
our people have been dancing on this land for thousands of years and yes, we are beautiful and awesome.
i would have loved to see the women represented but hey, it's a beginning.
i keep hearing "this is fresh" when the hoop dancer was performing. yes, fresh to u. a way of life for us.
maybe as a suggestion, during the top 20 shows, u could ask the native community to put on a demonstration.
to me the beauty is all the dancers together from old to young... all dancing, beautifully, happily... it's an amazing experience.
when i first started dancing, i shawl danced and my community gifted me with all the things i wear in my regalia... when i dance i carry all their kindness with me... now i dance traditional style and i have made(with help from their mother, my daughter and another beautiful talented woman in our community) my twin grandsons regalia. we put all our love for them in every piece, we held them in our arms and have watched them grow so their regalia is a reflection of the beauty we see in them. they looks fantastic dancing with pure joy as only children can.
this is what canada is all about... coudos to this show! the chinese bowl dancer was fabulous, the ukranian dancer, the "kung fu" dancer which mia wanted to marry lol.
as jean paul says "i love it!"

Watching the hoop dancer last night almost brought me to tears!! I was soooo happy and thrilled to see our culture being brought to the show! I was a little surprised that the judges had never seen it before, but thought it was great of them to ask the dancer to explain it!
I missed last weeks show, but i've heard that there was a champion Powwow dancer on then? Anyone know if there's a way to watch last weeks episode with him in it? Heard it was amazing and that the judges loved him too!! How exciting!!

Hoop dancer was excellent, made one proud to be First Nations.
As for the Dancer in regalia, i am sorry but if i was there i would have slapped that boy upside his head, It was the first times i saw a head band of a COBRA??? Since when have they lived in Canada?? the second thing was his comment about not having the opportunity to learn dance because he was aboriginal!!!!!! excuse me but i know several first nation Dancers that worked thier asses off to learn to dance and never ever have they at any time said it was difficult because they were aboriginal, that was an excuse and leaves a bad taste in my first nations mouth.
