My Humble Little Opinion - Top 8 - 80's Night

After bidding an unnecessary farewell to Ashley last week (although her post-getting voted off performance of 'Sir Duke' sounded like someone swinging a bag full of cats against a brick wall, she still had a lot more talent than some people who remain...) we come to 80's week. Great things came out of the 80's, such as Men Without Hats, the colour Neon Pink, and me. My father considers it the worst era in music, but with bands like the Killers big right now, it's making a comeback. And it definately led to an interesting show, to say the least. We were treated to a "delightful" rap between Farley Flex (who, despite his claim tonight, needs to be Queer Eyed so badly it hurts), and Ben Mulroney, who in doing so, proved he is the single Whitest man in Canadian history. Congratz, Ben. We also were treated to Zach singing in some kind of 80's metal band. I've never seen this video before. Now I know there was a reason why. Anyway, as always, tonight will be divided into the GOOD (those who made retro cool again), the BAD (those whose performances were just alright) and the UGLY (those who should have stayed in the 80's.) Here we go...

THE GOOD

DARYL BRUNT - TAINTED LOVE

Our favorite singing midget pulled it off again this week. Although in the 80's this kid was still in diapers, his performance of 'Tainted Love' was actually kind of cool. He didn't stick straight to the melody of the original, he played around with it a bit and it totally worked for him. He does indeed do weird performances, as Zach noted, but they're weird in an entertaining way. I'm not sure he's ready to be the Canadian Idol quite yet, but he's definately got a lot of fans and a lot of future to look forward to.

MELISSA O'NEILL - HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO

I'm with Sass. God, this song is insipid. And annoying. And Melissa did it well. She hit all the right notes, and she worked the stage. Does anyone else find it weird that the two 16 year olds, who weren't BORN until 1988-89, had the two best performances tonight? Anyway, we're all thankful she didn't pull out some Flashdance moves, but overall she did awesome tonight. If Canada has any sense, she won't be in the bottom two. Then again, Ashley... *single tear*

AARON WALPOLE - WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND

Hey! Another song I hate. Maybe the 80's really were awful. Hmm. Every time I hear this song, I think of that sketch on Saturday Night Live where Chris Farley was trying out to be a Chippendales Dancer, and he had that bizarre dance-off with whats-his-name. You know, the guy in Dirty Dancing. Patrick Stewart or whatever. No, wait, Patrick Stewart was Captain Picard. Patrick... SWAYZE! Yeah. And Chris Farley had his shirt off and it was gross and... umm... Wait, what was I talking about? Oh, Aaron. Yeah, very good performance. Dunno if I'd buy his CD, but he's fun to watch.

THE BAD

SUZI RAWN - HEARTBREAKER

This was one of two performances I couldn't decide whether to put in the good/bad category tonight. I opted for bad because it wasn't memorable enough to really wow me. Suzi is good, and Suzi is safe. She just doesn't have the chops to be a serious Idol, I don't think. She has plenty of stage presence, a good voice... Honestly, she was pretty on tonight, but I think she'd be more successful outside of the competition. But hey, I'm just one person. She did the song justice, hit good notes, but her voice isn't memorable.

JOSH PALMER - IN THE AIR TONIGHT

This was the other one I couldn't decide on. In this instance, I love the song but hate the performer. I thought Josh actually sort of did this song justice, in a weird way. He slipped down into the 'bad' category for that weird last note. Remember Loony Tunes, when Wile E. Coyote would try and trick the Roadrunner, and somehow he'd always end up falling off of a cliff? That's what the last note sounded like to me. "AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaa*splat*." Overall, his best performance to date, but he still has yet to win me over. And no, Farley, I would not buy his CD. Now go buy suits that aren't hideous.

REX GOUDIE - EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE

Well, Rex was certainly better than he has been the past couple of weeks. It was a nice song, but his weird growl that he does in his higher register didn't work for him. Rex has to go into that growl to hit the higher notes as he doesn't have a huge range like a Daryl or an Aaron, and on many songs it works, but on The Police, not so much. The rest of the song sounded nice, and I think he's back on track. at least He has the potential to be a big star, it's mostly song choice on his part.

CASEY LEBLANC - LIKE A PRAYER

Hey! Casey sang an ENTIRE song and I didn't fall asleep! Not even ONCE! Yeah, Madonna's one of those artists that doesn't have a great voice but has great material and a great stage presence, so she succeeds anyway. And Casey is one of those artists who doesn't have a great voice, and lacks on the stage presence and therefore won't be an Idol. She was better tonight than she has been though, she looks like she's making an effort to step up her game, which is appreciated. She started VERY strong, and fell back a bit as it went on. Hey, she's got potential, at least. She just needs the Personality Fairy to pay her a visit. (Hey, maybe the fairy could give Jake Gold one while she's at it. Kill two birds with one stone. And the not-ugly suit fairy could visit Farley... aww, forget it.)

AMBER FLEURY - JUST LIKE JESSE JAMES

Cher is a distinct artist because she has an incredibly recognizable voice. Amber most certainly does not. Just Like Jesse James is not a great song. It's actually kind of stupid. What made it popular is the way Cher sang it. She infuses life into her songs. Amber drained the life out of this song like some kind of horrible song-vampire who hides in dark alleys and attacks melodies at night. AAAAAH! In fact, the only hint of Cherness we saw all night was that Zack Werner changed his outfit between every performance, much like Cher herself does in concert. All Zach needed was a giant headdress made of peacock feathers. That'd be hot. Plus, the judges told Amber last week to do something upbeat, so she finds a quicker ballad, entirely missing the point of their advice. Thank goodness for once they called her on it. This might mark the end of Ms. Fleury's Idol run.

THE UGLY

ZACK WERNER'S SHIRT AFTER AARON'S PERFORMANCE

Seriously. Ew.

THE BOTTOM THREE:

Amber
Casey
Josh

GOING HOME:

Amber. Or Casey. But when I say Casey, someone else always goes home. So I'll say Amber, and then maybe Casey will go home. Right? RIGHT???

Just MHO....

I can't say I agree with all your choices, every one is entitled to their own opinions...here's mine...

DARYL BRUNT - TAINTED LOVE -- Absolutely murdered the song, if you by chance recorded that tune last night you may want to compare it to the original...no more explanation needed there. He's a must go.

MELISSA O'NEILL - HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO-- I thought she nailed it.

AARON WALPOLE - WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND-- By far not his best performance...but I think he tried to get the audience into it...good entertainer.

SUZI RAWN - HEARTBREAKER- Again not her best performance rather disappointing, but should one song eliminate a person...I think not...

JOSH PALMER - IN THE AIR TONIGHT- best show appearance yet...but he still stunk...totally destroyed the tune...he is just far to nauseating for my liking.... another must go...soon isn't soon enough.

REX GOUDIE - EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE- Not a totally earth shattering performance, he's a hard rocker at heart. But to compare him to Daryl is an insult to say the least...wonder what Daryl's voice will sound like in 3 years....

CASEY LEBLANC - LIKE A PRAYER- Well good song choice no pause between lines...whats with that....still I think that the voice needs work big time....she'll fall into her own.

AMBER FLEURY - JUST LIKE JESSE JAMES- Hmmm...if you like ballots fine. Again another last night, she does have a great voice...but girl lets here some rock!!!!

As far as the judges are concerned...I'm not going there...they are way too unpredictable....and IMHO they all are guilty of being tone deaf from time to time...much of the time is nit picking on each other as apposed to giving their all for the contestants.

hmm....tend to agree with you

There was a WHOLE LOTTA S***ING going on last night (the *** is NOT "ing")

I though Darryl, Aaron and Melissa s***ed the least. Good performances from all three, but maaaaaan, I hate all those songs.

Aaron got my vote(s) though....

I see Amber, and Casey and Josh in the bottom three.

I wish Josh would go....he creeps me out. I don't get the Sexy Rexy thing AT ALL. Listening to him scream for three weeks is grating on me - but if I put the TV on mute, he's not too hard on the eyes. I really like Suzie, but I was disappointed by her tonight.

Hmm, well I was right about Amber going home and Josh being in the bottom three. Suzi was a bit of an enigma, though...
