Talking The Great Cdn View REVIEW is back!!! :)

Welcome back, folks...

Yes, Cdn View is back at it again.

Ya know, for better for worse,
For richer for poorer,
... 'n mostly 'cause I just can't get enough of...

Our Own Undisputed Original...
CANADIAN IDOL!!!

Well, what a night it has been... that is, if you're in Eastern Canada...
Heh heh... those in Western Canada can read here, and then judge for themselves.

YES, THE SHOW TONIGHT IT WORTH WATCHING!!!
YES, TONIGHT IS IMPORTANT FOR VOTING!!
YES, I HAVE LISTED THE SINGERS IN THE ORDER WHICH THEY SANG!!
(i.e. this is an accurate guide, to vote for your favorite. Use the toll free number, and then pick the right order, when your favorite sang. No, restrictions do NOT allow me to post the number in plain english. This is as close as you're allowed to get. If you're confused, ask someone BY PM!!! Posting the number publicly on the forum gets your message deleted, by the moderators.)

Ummmm... er, only, ahhh, well, I don't know how many are getting voted off tonight.
See, I missed the show's intro... Sorry 'bout that, but nature was calling, and well, you know...
*Gulp*
Sorry, I'll have a potty handy for next week, I promise.
(At least, that's what I tell my mother, whenever she wants to hang up on me, because of nature calling her...)

Okay, on with the show...

1. Jeremy Koz - Well, this young one picked the opening starting position at the gate. And, out he comes, roaring with a hip, rocking tune. Anyone who didn't hear him would have had to have their ear dial off, because he sang right out the building!! NO, he was inside... but a good rocker, any half decent rocker, must be able to raise the roof!! That he did do. He sounded a bit hoarse in spots. A sign of weakness to me, as rockers can be raw edged, cutting even, but hoarse is when you quite can't get rawness vocaled out. Ah, the nuances of a rocker.... However, he did do just right, picking his song well, and singing into what he does best. With his performance, he gave notice to the others, that he came out into the boxing ring swinging with both fists. If you like Rock, vote for this guy, because he's the only one who sang rock tonight. Ummmm... if you don't like rock, well, I don't know if he is capable in other fields of singing...

2. Craig Sharpe - Craig came in the second round, and proved that boxers can do a knockout, without the hefty rock swipe. Instead, Craig chose a ballad, and highlighted finesse, and tone. I predict that this man will be a tough contender, as he may have a broader scope of tricks in his bag, when needed for the top ten variations saga. If tonight is any sign, I would watch this one. This one's got what it takes, to go the distance, to as high as the top 5.

3. Nathan Brown - Perhaps I'm wrong, but after two good performances, the bar was set. It seemed that Nathan was not up to par with the other two... not sure why. At the top 22 stage, a lot of factors come into play. Being on national TV is one of the biggies. So, I'm not sure if it was nerves, or song choice, or if that is simply the best that this man can sing. I'll have to watch the show again later tonight. It's not that he sang badly. It was not memorable. Perhaps the field this year is just really competitive. In that case, it is an honor to be in the top 22, no matter how anyone places in the end. I would not say that he had the weakest performance; neither can I can that he had a strong performance. So, the lower group he is in... (I'll reconsider again, after I view the show a second time... don't want to be unfair)

4. Brandon Jones - Young Brandon, 16 and in the top 22. Quite an achievement!! Quite the raw, new undeveloped talent, singing with a smile of innocence, too. He was off key tonight, for which I felt badly. But, hey, the kid is 16, and being on national TV, well, I KNOW that I would do a million times worse. Nerves probably did do a number on him. If New Brunswick, and the rest of Canada want to see how much a young new untrained talented young fellow can GROW in this year's competition, then vote to keep him in long enough, so that he learn from this experience.

5. Rob James - Bad, bad boy, Rob!!! "Put on my blue suede shoes, and... walking in Memphis..." - Rob, you robbed me, and sold me short! Of all the songs you could have picked, you picked this one, which people are tiring of hearing on "Idol" shows. UGH. If you're going to pick that song, you literally have to give it full throttle, for us to pay due attention to it. Instead, you seemed to hold back on the talent that IS in you. Playing Top 22 is like Russian Roullette... you had better put it ALL ON THE TABLE EACH WEEK if you want to get to the top ten, let alone have a shot at winning. Holding back on your !st voting week, is like shooting yourself in the foot. Don't count on Canadian audiences to keep you going, if you don't put it all in. No, on the Cdn Version, even the good singers get dumped early... like Ashley...

6. Keith MacPherson- Now, what's this chesnut haired guy going to do? WOW OH WOW OH WOW!!! Can this guy ever sing!!! This kinda quirky looking guy wins the CDN VIEW WEEK AWARD for best male vocal. Please note, that all the other guys may reenter next week, to win this coveted prize...

Sooooooooooo... what did he do? He was on key. He did not oversing the song. Rather, he brought out the song, as it was meant to be. He evoked meaning and different levels of nuance, by his tone control, and emoting. His notes and words were clear, clean, and crisp. If I sound like I'm rating a wine, well, this performance was refreshing to the palate. One to be celebrated. Look out folks, that chesnut haired kinda quirky guy may turn out to be IN, as in, THA BOMBE, this year. If he keeps on singing like this, he will go very far in the competition.
Oh, yes, there is also this humble, yet funny attitude in him. Very Canadian...

7. Mr. LaBelle - Now, have I got you all confused?? Heh heh... it's the Jacob Hoggard the SECOND, I'm talking about. Yes, the man didn't make it, and then he made it. And, yes, it would "s**k", as you said, to make it back in, to only be voted off this week. Well, how about it? What did he do? Why, his jovial charismic performance, of course. He is average, as far as vocal ability goes, however, he makes up for it in spades, in entertainment. I only wish that he would loosen up a bit more. If yer goin' to entertaaaaain us, well, GO FOR IT!!! We still remember Jacob doing "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" classic, and bending down to pick up that quarter, in those ridiculously tight pants. Yep, if entertainment is your game, then don't hold back. Do it all, but do it well, and you'll go places.
(I kept thinking, while he was standing there, and Ben said something about hands behind the back... I kept thinking, why doesn't Mr. LaBelle give Ben a set of Rabbit ears??? Would be hilarious, especially since Ben was in such a nice suit tonight...)

8. Tyler Lewis - Ah, the lonely Saskie, who makes it to the top 22. Good performance, although I don't believe it was one of his better ones. He can do better than that. I've seen it on the show. Again, adjusting to MegaToronto, coming from a small town in SK, and to singing to ?? million TV viewers is a big thing. Some singers are able to adjust faster than others. All ye Saskies, better get yourselves on that phone and vote!! That is, if you want to give this young singer a chance to show off all his talent. I think in a week or two, he'll be comfy in the saddle, and be able to better give it all that he has. Nice lower range voice... hmmmm, great possiblilities with that.

9. Sheldon Elter - Straight from Alberta, comes this rock, this towering Gibralter of a singer. I've heard some good things out of this man, so far. Until... tonight. Problem? Song choice. It was just a very, very bad choice. So bad, that it made this true singer sound like he was singing karaoke. I felt really bad about that. His song selection, and performance, did not do justice to the man. This man is capable of delivering, but he must pick songs that will bring out his vocal talent and bring home his identity. Hopefully, voters will vote for him anyways, and keep him in, to correct this easy problem.

10. Chad Doucette - Okay, for all you who want to know where to find this good looking young fella, who just missed his high school prom... he lives in EAST CHEZZETCOOK, NS.!!! That's right, that is how you spell it. Yes, it's a very small place. Yes, it is Amazing, to have a such a talented singer come from there. The fishing is good there, but singing?? Well, yes, if you're Chad Doucette. What we have in Chad, is a teenager, probably 17, who has yet to reach his peak, in singing. He did a VERY good job, with a light ballad this week. I'm not sure how much range he has yet. However, he does know how to show utter vulnerability. This is the man to watch, not just for this year, but moreso over the next 5 years. I'd be interested to see how he would do with more formal training under his belt. Well, the battle for youth, singing, and looks will be fought between the NB and NS border this year... Let's see what these young ones can come up with...

11. Greg Neufeld - Yes, for all the Abbottsford, BC fanatics!! Kudos to them for getting two finalists to the top 22. The rest of Canada wants to know... What are you all drinking out there?? There must be something in that Abbottsford water, that the rest of us aren't getting.... I mean, Shane and Jacob, and now you do a repeat??!! Greg is, I suspect, one of the judges' favorites. The show's attention on this fellow has been huge!! How to describe him? A kind man who likes hockey, who likes to sing. He reminds me more of a folk kind of singer... singing songs true to his heart, or true to the land. He sings from the heart. What I am confused by, however, is his maximum potential. Some singers grow in the competition. Others are just talent giants, right from the beginning. I can't honestly say, in my opinion, that he is a giant talent singer, right from square one. However, I'm not sure how much room there is above him, for him to grow in this environment, where singing is the competition. Can he have a career? Possibly, yes. Is Cdn Idol the right vehicle, for him, to make it happen? Possibly, no. This kind of singer falls in a category, that is more likely to be swallowed up by other more popular genres. This is likely Greg's biggest obstacle. And, yet, if I were him, I would not change how or what I sing. Because to do that, would take the heart of it all. Any singer without heart is suicide. So, carry on, and do your best.

For all of you who read this, and still don't know who to vote for, may I present an alternative?
Just dial that toll free number, and pick #12!!!
Who's #12?
Well, I've decided, that tonight's #12, is none other then Ben Mulrooney himself!!

Hey, the man dressed to the nines tonight. Quite dapper, with his hair all slicked just so...
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... if you don't know who to vote for, vote #12.
No, you will have no problem getting through, no problem at all.
Don't wait for the message. I deleted it.
Just dial, and redial.
Remember, every vote counts.

I'll reveal the winner of this week's round, later this week.
If Ben wins, then the others are in serious trouble...
If Ben doesn't win, then he'll be replaced, with someone else, for next week.

Thus ends The Great Canadian Review, by Cdn View...
Tune in next time...
And, sorry for being so long winded, but the show was 1 1/2 hrs long!! Got to be fair, and give the singers and Ben all a fair shot at this.

Love,
Cdn View

Okay, now where's my 5 1/2 fans? Hooked, Peg, DW, LadyG, GL?

Completely agree with your assessment of Keith, he was the stand-out for me last night.

In my opinion, Keith has what I call the "Taylor Hicks" factor: He's not only a technically proficient singer, but also a highly original, accomplished musician and artist who excels at song interpretation; he also has an endearing personality and sense of humour that people will either love or hate; plus his looks, appearance, and manner play directly against the Idol "mold", something audiences seem to be drawn to this year....

Keith is gonna be a "love him or hate him" competitor. If the "lovers" outnumber the "haters", he could surprise everyone and take the whole thing (like Taylor Hicks did on AI). But if the "haters" outnumber the "lovers", he will end up leaving competition far earlier than he should (like Jenny Gear and Josh Palmer before him).

Obviously, I'm hoping for the former scenario. Only time will tell....
