CTV's Canadian Idol Peaks at 2-million Viewers

CTV's Canadian Idol returned to once again stake its claim as the most-watched summer television program in the country. The Season Five
premiere episode peaked at 2.06 million viewers, finishing with 1.6 million viewers for the 90-minute episode. Canadian Idol not only won the night on Tuesday but also recorded the largest debut for any summer series, followed
by So You Think You Can Dance (May 24, 1.45 million) and Pirate Master (May 30, 1.04 million), all on CTV.

In Canada's largest television market, the Canadian Idol season premiere was up 23% compared to last season among the key A25-54 demo.

eTalk's exclusive Canadian Idol coverage last night drew an impressive 537,000 viewers, more than 100,000 more viewers and up 27% against ET Canada (Global, 424,000).

It will be awesome with the rest of the provinces being able to join in watching
Will it make a difference? Wow! with Newfounland and Nova Scotia having front runners in, of course it will. They'll want to see the competition on Tuesday

Since "peaking" figures are not officially published, we still have the BBM figure of 1.462 million. The CI viewing days of Season 2 are long gone... alas.

You know...in reality...there isn't much else to watch during the summer so if they were up against Grey's Anatomy, Lost, or 24 or anyone else the figures might be quite different but the top shows are on hiatus...the playing field is open...

That's even less than last year premiere, which was 1.696 millions according to this site. Not a good start to the season...

Didn't Season 2 peak out at about 4 million viewers? I know they had amazing numbers for a Canadian show. Unfortunately, it's gone downhill since then. Can you give us comparative numbers for the four seasons?

I can give the two extremes off the top of my head. The finale for Season 2 had an average of 3.4 million viewers. The finale for Season 4 had an average of 2.4 million viewers. This is a drop of 30%, and to me, shows that quality of contestants does have an impact on the ratings.

I am hoping that this 5th Season will be like Season 2.

Wow, that's quite the difference.

At the beginning of Season 3, after season two was so awesome, were the numbers still quite high. Or was there a huge drop at that point too?
