An "After The Comprtition Is Over" Thought.

When a White Guy (or, anyone for that matter) sings "Sweet Home Alabama":

How does the Afro-American community of the 'South Land' really feel about this song. (as it puts down Neil Young for pointing out the 'oppressions' of the Black [Afro-American] community) ???

Is this something that should be addressed about this song, or is just a 60's mentality that should be forgotten ?

Just A Thought.

Maybe it's a mentality that is forgotten because I certainly haven't heard of this before.

Here's the lyrics:

Big wheels keep on turning
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the southland
I miss alabamy once again
And I think it’s a sin, yes

Well I heard mister young sing about her
Well, I heard ole neil put her down
Well, I hope neil young will remember
A southern man don’t need him around anyhow

Sweet home alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you

In birmingham they love the governor
Now we all did what we could do
Now watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth

Sweet home alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you
Here I come alabama

Now muscle shoals has got the swampers
And they’ve been known to pick a song or two
Lord they get me off so much
They pick me up when I’m feeling blue
Now how about you?

Sweet home alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you

Sweet home alabama
Oh sweet home baby
Where the skies are so blue
And the governor’s true
Sweet home alabama
Lordy
Lord, I’m coming home to you
Yea, yea montgomery’s got the answer

Apparently when Bo sang the song, he left out the verse about Neil Young.

- You're right, the Neil Young verse was left out. As for blacks on AI is concerned, black competitors were singing along near the end of the song, Randy was clapping hands, Simon was smiling and Paula was being well...Paula.

"In Birmingham they 'Robbed' the Governor, [1972 - I think]
And, We all did what we could do !!! "

Again, hate to 'Reprise' a bad situation - BUT , I think the REAL lyrics need to be told !

If you want to see the TRUE contraverse between Neil Young and the State of Alabama, read the lyrics of "Southern Man".

Enough said, "Let The Courts" (and the people of Modern Day Alabama) decide. - And, It sounds like they have, to change the 'wording' of the song to represent modern day events ...

That's enough for ME !!!

- Well I don't know on what you base it on, but I checked a few lyric pages including at Lynyrd Skynyrd's official site and just listen to the original version and it reads "...they love the governor." I figure that most see Sweet Home Alabama as nothing more than a catchy song about Alabama. By the way, it was recorded in 1974.

Not sure of the year, but the reference was definitely to a 'Break-In' to the Governor's Mansion in Birmingham. (I still think it was '72). I know, because I was 'alive' back back then !!!

Oopps, guess I'm showing my age !!!

The lyrics go:
"In Birmingham they 'Robbed' the Governor, (fool, fool, fool)
And, We all did what we could do !!! "

PS: If you can tell me why the would say they 'Loved' the Governor and then called him "fool, fool, fool"; then you have my Vote !!!

- Just let me quickly say that the "robbery" you're stuck on may relate to the following line , "now Watergate does not bother me." The Watergate break-in happened in Washington, DC in 1972, then the investigation was dragged out through 1973 with finally Pres. Nixon resigning in 1974. So it's very unlikely that Lynyrd Skynyrd would even bother to mention 'a minor break-in' if it was recorded in 1972...The song was on their second album Second Helping which was released in April 1974. You can find the original release date at Amazon.com along with some comments which mentions in part that the song was actually written in 1973.

Check your American history, ther Break-In to the Governor's Mansion of Alabama did occur (and it was major news) for its time !!!

Just goes to show that you "Youngen's" live in the current world with complete dis-regard of the mistakes of you 'Elders' who may show you the "Path of Deception" that you shouldn't follow.

To end a POLITICALLY charged song on a "Positive" note !!!

It appears that the Song Book has been motified to turn something 'contraversial' into something 'positive'.

This should be celebrated as a Good Thing. (and a changing of the times.)
